Why does the software continue to state the client and/or agent is not authorised?

If Easy MTD VAT continues to state the client and/or agent is not authorised, please refer to the following guidance to try and rectify the problem:

PROBLEM SOLUTION
The authority process was not successfully completed for the client. Perform the authority process in full.
The client has not signed up for Making Tax Digital for VAT on the HMRC website. Sign up now.
The HMRC account for the client has not yet been enabled for Making Tax Digital for VAT. Wait until the sign up is enabled (which can take up to 5 days) then perform the authority process.
The VAT number specified for the client in Easy MTD VAT is incorrect. Select the client from the Client list box then click the Modify button to check and correct the VAT number.
During the authorisation process, incorrect account credentials (user ID and password) for the client were used to sign into the Government Gateway. Perform the authority process using the correct account credentials for the client.
As an agent and during the authorisation process, incorrect agent account credentials (user ID and password) were used to sign into the Government Gateway. Be aware, HMRC may have recently changed your agent ID (user ID). Complete the authority process using the correct agent account credentials.
As an agent, the client (that is assigned to your HMRC agent account) does not have the same Agent Reference assigned to it in Easy MTD VAT as other clients. Select the client from the Client list box, click the Modify button then specify the same Agent Reference as the other clients assigned to your agent account.
There may be an issue with the HMRC system (i.e. maintenance is being performed). Wait an hour then perform the authority process.
There may be an issue with your HMRC account. Contact HMRC to rectify the problem then perform the authority process.

Performing the Authority Process

To grant authority for Easy MTD VAT to interact with HMRC on behalf of a client or all clients within an agent account, perform the following actions in Easy MTD VAT:

  1. Select the client from the Client list box. As an agent, ensure all clients in Easy MTD VAT that are associated with your HMRC agent account have the same Agent Reference (this will enable you to simultaneously grant authority for all these clients).
  2. Click the Authority button.
  3. In the window that appears, perform the actions shown until the authority process is completed. Your Government Gateway account credentials (user ID and password) will be required during this process.
