What is a final declaration?

A final declaration is the last step in the Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax journey. It involves performing the following actions after the year end and prior to the submission deadline on the 31 January the following year:

  • Reviewing the final tax calculation produced by HMRC from information already held HMRC or previously submitted.
  • Reading the HMRC declaration statement asking if you agree to the tax calculation being complete and correct. Refer to the declaration statement below.
  • Agreeing the tax calculation is complete and correct. When using Easy MTD, this involves ticking a checkbox.
  • Submitting that agreement to HMRC. When using Easy MTD, this involves clicking a Make Final Declaration button then confirming this action by clicking a Yes button.

As you can see, a final declaration doesn't involve specifying or submitting any figures. You've already done this. You're simply notifying HMRC that the tax calculation is complete and correct which finalises your end of year position for tax.

The following declaration statement is presented when using Easy MTD. It is slightly different for tax agents.

Before you can submit the information displayed here in response to your notice to file from HM Revenue & Customs, you must read and agree to the following statement by ticking the checkbox.

“I declare that the information and self-assessment I have filed are (taken together) correct and complete to the best of my knowledge. I understand that I may have to pay financial penalties and face prosecution if I give false information.”
